Permafrost Gameplay Preview

Permafrost is presented as a story-driven open-world survival game in an endless winter. This preview uses the current Steam listing to explain the actual gameplay pillars without inventing warmth thresholds, recipes, map coordinates, or a best co-op role.

The survival problem is the cold

Steam describes a near-future Earth locked in endless winter after catastrophes culminated in the shattering of the moon. Frostbite, storms, preparation, shelter, and timing are all named as survival pressures. The cold is therefore more than scenery: every trip needs a return plan.

  • Check weather and exposure before leaving a safe point.
  • Treat shelters as progression anchors, not only cosmetic bases.
  • Record travel time and conditions when a playable build exposes them.
  • Keep normal cold observations separate from storm observations.

What the Rook and world setup confirm

The player takes the role of a Rook, an engineer with rebuilding skills and little wilderness experience. Steam places the story across frozen cities and wilderness, with faction-controlled territories, abandoned shelters, broken machines, hunting, scavenging, crafting, and exploration-gated adaptation.

  • Repair and rebuilding are part of the published progression frame.
  • Cities and wilderness create different exploration contexts.
  • Faction territories are confirmed as a world-layer description, not a complete faction guide.

The dog companion is a practical system

The official store description says the rescued dog can scout ahead, warn of danger, carry supplies, and accompany the player. Those are the confirmed companion functions. It does not publish the dog’s range, carry capacity, upgrade tree, or behavior under every weather condition.

Do not turn the companion description into invented statistics or a guaranteed route through enemy territory.

Solo and co-op preparation

Steam describes solo play or survival alongside up to three friends, for a total of up to four players. It also frames shelter networks and divided responsibilities as part of the co-op experience. Before launch, the useful question is not “which class is best?” but which tasks the actual build allows players to divide.

  • Record the player cap shown by the build.
  • Test whether repairs, shelter work, hunting, and scouting can be performed independently.
  • Compare shelter and resource outcomes at one, two, and four players before ranking roles.

What a real Permafrost guide still needs

The official Steam page does not provide exact temperature values, frostbite thresholds, storm durations, warmth items, recipes, shelter costs, weapon stats, or map coordinates. These are high-intent search questions, but publishing guessed numbers would make the page less useful. Add each value only with a version, location, condition, and reproducible test note.
